The museum “Kantakuzen’s Catacomb” is an affiliate of the main museum in Moldavanka district, located downtown in an ancient quarry of the Quarantine gully, at the address: 7, Bunina st. Besides, it has been a monument of local significance since 2017. There you will immerse yourself in the history of construction of early Odessa. The earliest inscription found on the wall was dated 1812. This is the oldest quarry of Odessa. Particularly its stone was used for construction of a number of mansions in the historic center of the city. Its “construction career” having been finished already in the beginning of XIX century, the catacomb has changed a lot of occupations: a refuge for adventurers, a storehouse for smuggled goods, a shelter in the war periods…
Total length of the catacomb is 120 m. Depth – 10 m. The catacomb is unique with its location and great history as well as the lowest air temperature among all others. This is why you should not forget to bring your warm clothes.
Many “cultural layers” have been found during the cleaning process in the quarry. Besides, from our exhibitions you can learn about first developers for the onstruction in the area of the Quarantine gully – duke Kantakuzen and merchant Novikov – as well as the history of construction of significant buildings in Odessa.
